Questions ±) We know that the source of drinking water for Providence RI is the Scituate Reservoir. The Scituate
Reservoir is managed by Providence Water Supply. Every year, Providence water releases an annual
water quality report. The latest available copy of this report can be found here:
https://provwater.com/water_quality/annual_reports/2021. Use this report to answer the
following questions:
a) What regulated substances does Providence Water include in their annual report? What unregulated
substances do they include?
b) What are the typical sources of the regulated substances providence water tests for?
c) Were any violations of regulated substances reported for this reporting period? If so what were they?
2) We are now going to take a look at some water quality data collected from local surface water bodies,
in particular, dissolved oxygen.
a) What are some things that can cause dissolved oxygen to drop in a surface water body?
b) The excel spreadsheet attached to this assignment shows dissolved oxygen data from two ponds for
the year 2010. This data was collected by Watershed Watch, a program that uses volunteers to
collect water samples from surface water bodies throughout the state of Rhode Island for water
quality monitoring. Graph the dissolved oxygen vs the date for both the surface sample and the
deep sample for each water body by inserting an x-y scatter plot. You can put both the surface and
the deep sample for each pond on the same graph if you choose. (If you do not know how to do
this, please ask!)
c) What trends do you notice for the surface sample and the deep sample for Carr Pond? What about
for Sand Pond? What factors might be contributing to these trends? What are the similarities and
differences in dissolved oxygen concentrations between the two ponds throughout the sampling
period?
d) Using google maps or similar look up the locations of these two ponds. What kind of areas are they
located in (i.e. rural? Urban?)? Do the dissolved oxygen trends in each of the ponds make sense
based on this information? Why or Why not?
e) The following chart describes water quality based on dissolved oxygen concentration in ppm (1 mg/L
= 1 ppm).
What is the water quality of the water in Carr Pond according to the surface and the deep samples
collected? What is the water quality of the water in Sand Pond according to the surface and the
deep samples collected?
