Directions: Choose one of the following two prompts and respond in a 2-3 page essay. Note that I
am interested in analysisaking arguments that attempt to explain how and why things function in
the textsnd not just summary. Use relevant quotations from the texts to support your points.
The questions ask you to place some aspect of the vernacular tradition into conversation with the
literary tradition, so make sure you account for both aspects of the question in your answer. All work

I.
Hip-hop grew out of the Black Arts and Power Movements as a cultural phenomena that advocates
social awareness and self-consciousness. In Spike Leeàfilm Do the Right Thing, the song ©ght the
Power0erformed by Public Enemy is heard throughout the film, so much so that it almost becomes
a character within the film. Radio Raheem utilizes the song as a protest against the lack of racial
diversity and respect among Sal, Pino, and Vito at Sal’s Famous Pizzeria`white business at the

Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. were not, as is sometimes suggested, polar opposites, but
they were powerful men with very different visions of the social and racial situation in the 1950s and
1960s, and they led their followers in markedly different ways. After reading and listening to both
Malcolm Xà(e Ballot or the Bullet!nd KingàRve Been to the Mountaintop$iscuss the
different political and economic strategies expressed in the texts. In addition, discuss the tone, the
manner of address, and the vocal qualities of both sermons that come across when listening to these
texts.
