Tips for Writing the Argumentative Research Essay(ings we¥ discussed before
on one sheet. Keep up the good work!
? Include in your essay the revised version of the introduction you submitted separately
? The introductory paragraph should exhibit the eight characteristics of an effective
introduction as we discussed in class
? Make sure each body paragraph has a topic sentence that relates to and supports your
thesis
? Make sure each body paragraph supports and develops its topic sentence
? Pay attention to all aspects of composition, such as grammar, punctuation, sentence
structure, organization, diction/word usage; consult the English tutors at the Writing
Center for help
? Your Works cited page must follow MLA forms; see Chapter 28 of our textbook
? Cite all secondary sources used in your essay
? Make sure all the sources used in your essay are listed in the Works Cited page
? Make sure that your essay uses only the sources you list in the Works Cited page
? The Works Cited page must be part of your word document as the last page of your
essay; you cannot submit it separately from the essay
? Use the four steps of framing material from a secondary source, whether a direct
quote, paraphrased, or summarized; see Chapter 27 of our textbook
? Remember¬ock quotes are not required, but you can use one block quote
? Failing to cite a secondary source is plagiarism, and you know what that means ?

? If your topic is a problem, discuss those solutions in a short paragraph after you have
fully explained your causes and before you provide your concluding paragraph
? Provide a short concluding paragraph that restates your thesis and provides a few
closing comments
