CSUN Exploring Jewish Worship at Temple Ahavat Shalom Essay
Description
This project will involve you visiting a religious temple/institution that is not of your own tradition. I would like you to attend a service or other religious function, which you can observe/participate in. You may need to do some research to find out when services/functions are being held at whichever place you choose to visit. You may also need to speak to someone there beforehand to make sure it is okay for you to attend. Many of these places have websites where you can get this information (check their calendars or “events” page), or you can call them. Some will offer to give you personal tours, which you can do as well. Below is a sample list of places you can visit, some which previous students have gone to before. However, you are welcome to pick your own place as long as I approve it beforehand. Everyone is expected to send me a short paragraph of where you would like to go by week 9, so I can approve it – the earlier, the better. For the proposal you simply need to send me the name of the institution you want to visit (and a website if there is one) and let me know what function/service/holiday gathering you are trying to attend.
Tell me about:
®bsp;What you observed and learned
- ®bsp;Description of who attended (just practitioners? the public?) androughly how many attended
- ®bsp; What the meaning, significance, and function of the service/ritual/event was for, according to either worshippers or the priest?
- ®bsp;Use the tools you have gained in class to look for myth, ritual, sacred space, images of the sacred, cultural differences, etc.
- ®bsp;Any other interesting observations you can make about the space (how it was set up, who and how worship was conducted, what rituals, practices were taking place)
- ®bsp;Make sure to include at least one page with a picture of yourself at the site and other pics of site in your paper
