Video: Conservation of Momentum lab lecture
For the “in-person” lab, for each spring setting (short, medium, and long) you would
launch a ball horizontally 10 times to the floor, and use that information to determine the
launch speed of the ball and its error – and then calculate the initial momentum and
error in the initial momentum. Then using the same setting, perform an inelastic collision
with a cart and catcher assembly, which would have its position recorded by a motion
detector and Logger Pro. You are given the Logger Pro files after the collision
simulation. You perform 10 collisions per spring setting. Then for each setting, import
the text files, and do a curve fit (mt+b) and record the absolute value of the slope (m)
and its error. The slope of the position-time graph is velocity. Then you can find the
momentum after the collision, and compare to the momentum of the ball before the
collision.
