College American Health Presentation
Description
Building on the topic you chose last week, you will now look for data. Some you can get from Healthy People and some you will need to look up. Your slides should tell the viewer the “story”of you problem. Where is it? Who has it?
This unit is on Epidemiology: “The study of the distribution (WHO/WHERE) and determinants (WHY or ASSOCIATED FACTORS) of diseases and injuries in human populations. Epidemiology is concerned with the frequencies (HOW OFTEN) and types of illnesses and injuries in groups of people (WHO) and with the factors that influence their distribution. One of the five core PH disciplines.”.
This week you will be the epidemiologist evaluate your problem. Where and when is it most predominant? Who is it impacting? You wont be running actual studies to look at disease or problem rates, but you will be using the literature to find out what others discovered. These slides should give us an overview of your problem’s DISTRIBUTION. We will do determinants next week since it is such a big topic.
You are the epidemiologist studying your problem:
*What kind of study did the researchers use?
*How common is the problem (ie x% of adults, 1 in x children)
* How is your problem distributed across the population (age, gender, race)?
*Is it more common geographically?
*Who does this problem happen to (race) ?
What numbers do we have to describe this?
Tell us what the data here shows. The reader should see a snapshot of your problem. We should see numbers in these slides and have them labeled so the reader can understand. ie” 10% of adults over 65 have x disease”. You may re-state some of the good info from last week if it is valuable.
NEXT week we go into determinants-social factors, education, income ,genetics etc so don’t focus on that yet!
TO DO THIS:
1. Return to HP 2030 and click on your area of interest.
2. Click on that to expand it and see the details. Report the recent data. This will not enough data! For more, search the internet for references that deal with your problem. I googled “reading statistics” . Find articles and data you can understand to tell us who has the problem and how common it is. Add anything else interesting or pertinent. Here is my example:
Fill out the 3 slides that describe your problem and ADD them to the end of your last presentation. Then move the reference slide to the end. Use the same tile headings I did just put your data in. Your slide should describe your problem. Who is most effected? Where are they? What are their characteristics?

DEVELOPMENT
HEALTHY PEOPLE OBJECTIVE
Area
? Children Population
Subset
? Health behaviours
? Child and adolescent development
Goal
? Increase the proportion of children living with at
least 1 parent who works full time DOH-O3
PROBLEM BACKGROUND
?
Children in low-income families are more prone to experience mental and
physical health issues (Francis et al., 2018).
?
They may also engage in risky activities that negatively impact their health.
?
One parent working full-time reduces the likelihood of poverty for their
children.
?
Having at least 1 parent with steady work improves a childàhealth as they
can easily afford and access quality care (Spencer, 2018).
?
I picked adolescent and childhood development as childhood foundations
are crucial in fostering healthy and fully functional adults in future.
?
Results suggest that early experiences have a significant impact on how a
child’s brain develops and lay the groundwork for later learning, good
health, and appropriate behavior.
DATA
? The health, social, emotional, and cognitive
growth, behavior, and educational outcomes of
children are all negatively impacted by poverty.
? Children from low-income families are more
susceptible to a variety of health issues, such as
malnutrition, chronic illness, and mental health
issues.
? Poor mental health can result from poverty in
both children and adults due to societal stresses,
stigma, and being traumatized.
DISTRIBUTION
? Adolescents’ cortical systems are much less
developed than those of adults’, and they use
these regions less effectively, which has an effect
on their top-down cognitive functions, such as
organizing, working memory, impulse control,
and making their decisions.
PROBLEMS FACING ADOLESCENCE AND
HEALTH BEHAVIORS IN CHILDREN
? The types of issues can vary depending on the
child’s age and can include a wide range of issues
like conduct issues, antisocial behavior, anxiety,
depression, and substance abuse, which are some
of the most common issues affecting children and
adolescents’ mental health.
? Teenagers frequently experience health issues
related to puberty, body image, diet, substance
abuse, mental health, and sexual health.
? Support is needed to promote open
communication, and respect their space to be of
assistance to them during this time.
