Final Review Sheet
Fall, 2022
Review Sheet:
The final exam covers the basic knowledge in civil engineering material class, there are basic concept questions and
calculation questions. Please refer to our mid-term exam for exam format and question types. This list is to help you
focusing on the final exam (comprehensive exam, but more on the new contents after midterm), not an inclusive list
of all the topics we¥ covered throughout the semester.
Part I. Material Engineering Basics
All basic concepts.
o Physical properties of materials such as shape, size, mass, weight, unit weight, moisture content, absorption
etc.
o Mechanical properties such as elastic, plastic, viscoelstic to name a few.
o Stress, strain, modulus, thermal stress/strain, possionàratio etc and related calculations.
Part II. Aggregates

Sieve analysis calculation and graphing
How to read and understand gradation curves, what is well-graded mixture, gaped or uniform mixture
How are the sieves numbered, what is the size to differentiate Coarse and fine aggregates? What is #200
sieve used for?
Why do we need to do compaction? What kind of mixture can achieve a better compaction? How to get
Uniformity coefficient of a mixture? What does the uniformity coefficient number mean?
What is desired gradation?
Angularity, surface area, moisture content (all four states), absorption, free moisture
Density, bulk density, specific gravity
How do you calculate the property of a blended aggregate mix, for example, three stockpiles mixed together,
I know each stockpileàproperty and proportion of my mix, what is the final value after blending?
Part III. Portland Cement and Portland Cement Concrete

Types of cement and concrete
Water-cement ratio
Hydration process
Workability of concrete, slump test, how to modify/change workability?
Admixtures such as water reducer, air entrainer etc, why and how to use them?
What type of water can be used when mixing concrete? How can you determine if a substitute water is
acceptable?
Concrete strength, proportioning and properties
Part IV. Other Materials

Asphalt vs. cement
Viscoelastic behavior of asphalt
How will temperature affect the strength of the materials
Can you calculate an steel rodàelongation if given the original dimetions, temperature change, and thermal
expansion coefficient?
