Essay 2 Instructions: Character Connection
Assignment
In Unit 3, we explore texts that relate to the theme of culture and identity. For Essay 2, you will
choose a character from anything we¥ read with whom you most connect. You will describe their
culture/identity using quotes and details from the text, then demonstrate why you relate to them.
The connection you make will be your thesis and should be inspired by one of the themes of this
unit. (Example themes include but are not limited to culture/identity as it relates to narrative voice,
race, gender, sexuality, family, environment, and personal growth.) The essay itself will prove your
thesis, especially with direct quotes, pulling as well from your own personal narrative.
Purpose
A character connection essay involves the close reading of literature. The goal is to encourage
making personal connections to literature, as well as critical thinking about the ways in which
literature serve as cultural artifacts reflecting society. This goes beyond pointing out the obvious
character descriptions and looking deeper into their motivation, struggles, and place within society.
Specifics
This paper will be 3-5 pages. All quotes must be properly introduced, integrated, and formatted
using correct MLA style. This means you will also have to include a Works Cited page with the text
entry. Though not required, you are encouraged to do some external research as it relates to the
author, story, or publication time in history to give yourself more context. I expect excellent
examples and specific details from the reading you select.
All papers in this class must follow the below formatting:

? Times New Roman, 12 point font
? 1-inch margins
? last name and page numbering in upper-right header
? creative titles centered on the first page
? proper headings that includes your full name, class/section, my name, the date
