Review Questions
- Studies have shown that maternal responsiveness (that is, how quickly a mother responds to her infantænbsp;cries) is associated with the fussiness of the baby (Hubbard & van IJzendoorn, 1991). Specifically, more responsive mothers have less fussy babies. But which variable comes first?
- Sketch the results of a longitudinal correlational (cross-lag) study to test this question.
- Imagine that you measure these two key variables at three time periods. What are the two key variables?
- What pattern of results would you get if maternal responsiveness leads to decreased infant fussiness
2. Indicate whether each statement below describes a mediation hypothesis, a third-variable argument,page273, or a moderator result. First, identify the key bivariate relationship. Next, decide whether the extra variable comes between the two key variables or is causing the two key variables to simultaneously. Then draw a sketch of each explanation, following the examples in Figure 9.14.
- Having a dog is associated with a longer lifespan because people with fewer health problems are more able to have dogs, and people who have fewer health problems live longer.
- Having a dog is associated with a longer lifespan, but especially among people living alone; the relationship is weaker among people who live with others.
- Having a dog is associated with a longer lifespan because people who have dogs get more exercise and exercise makes them healthier (and live longer).
