Calculate the Total Water Pressure at A Point in A Fluid Column Questions
Question Description
I’m working on a civil engineering question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.
3. Water at 20àflows through a vertical sand column of length 80 cm and diameter 6 cm. The median grain size of the sand d = 0.25 mm, the hydraulic conductivity K = 5.0 m/d and the porosity is 0.30. The head at the upper end of the column is 90 cm, and at the lower end it is 50 cm
Calculate and plot (on one graph) the hydraulic head (h), the elevation head (z) and the pressure head (?) along the column length x; set x = 0 cm at the upper end of the column and x = 80 cm at the lower end. Use units of cm for head)
Calculate the intrinsic permeability of the soil (in m2).
- Is Darcy’s law applicable? Why or why not?
- Calculate total water pressure (in units of psi) in the middle of the column at x = 40 cm.
- If the effective porosity is 0.20, what is its travel time through the column?
