“The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things. He is the one that gets the people to do the greatest things.” ~Ronald Reagan
This resonates with me. It took me more than a decade into my career to actually understand what a manager does. I initially thought that the purpose of a manager was to crack the whip on their employees, then take credit for all of the work of their subordinates. Let’s just say I started with some bad managers. I didn’t realize there was a difference between a manager and a leader until I met the right one. Most importantly, a manager tells their employees what to do while a leader encourages their team. Also managers meet expectations, while leaders chart new growth. These two principles tie into my quote and I have experienced first-hand how leaders make great employees.
