Brandman University Bowenian Perspective Discussion
Description
select a film and view it from a Bowenian perspective. The film must clearly depict family interactions and dynamics, whether it is a traditional or nontraditional family unit (e.g. nuclear family system, created family system, system of circumstances). After viewing the film of your choice, develop a genogram.
Genograms are a useful tool in exploring a family system and identifying generational patterns, especially when change is difficult within a family system. It is a visual representation of a personàfamily tree and can be used to facilitate changes in those patterns. In developing your movie genogram, include the following:
- The identified patient (main character of the movie) and the people that live in the same home as the identified patient. Put a circle around this group of individuals.
- The family structure (2-3 generations)
- Identify any mental illness
- Identify conflict, enmeshment, cutoff, triangulation
- Identify marriage and divorce
- Identify life cycle transitions (e.g., death, miscarriage, retirement, trauma, etc)
- Identify substance use
