Final Project
Due: December 12th at 11:59pm
Background: EMG is the acronym for electromyography -easurement of bioelectric signals
from the muscle. The project comprises 2 parts that will be completed in laboratory sections
and a final report.
Deliverables for the project:
1. You will work in pairs. You may choose your project partner. If you cannot find a
partner, one will be assigned to you.
2. You will have two lab sessions available to complete this project. Part 1 will be
completed the first week and Part 2 will be completed the second week.
3. Before Part 2 of the lab, you will be expected to complete a 2ep assignment. ou will
need to turn this assignment onto canvas, and you will need to bring a printed copy to
lab.
4. You will not be admitted into lab without the completion of the mini assignment.
5. When citations are needed you should cite academia or research only. No Wikipedia
6. Demonstrate the working of parts 1 and 2 to Ms. Nicole Berry.
7. Write a 6-page report in the IEEE format on EMG measurement. Your report should
follow IEEE paper format. You do not have to write a double column report. Single
spaced, size 12 font, margin of 1 Page 6 is for references.
8. This project is intended to span two semesters. This semester you will do research and
prepare to build the device. Next semester you will build the device and do additional
tasks with a second report.
Part 1: Use the Biopac system and the Biopac manual in the lab, to measure the EMG from your
lab partneràbiceps.
a. Record the waveform.
b. Analyze the effect of contraction and relaxation on the measured EMG signal.
Part 2: Design and implementation of your own EMG device
a. Determine the electrodes to be used to pick up the EMG signals. How many do you
need?
b. What is the amplitude of an EMG signal?
c. Design a pre-amplification circuit using appropriate instrumentation amplifier, for a gain
of 100. Draw the circuit diagram
d. The EMG circuits are commonly affected by EKG noise. How would you remove this
noise signal from the amplified EMG? Draw the circuit diagram.
e. Simulate your entire circuit on Multisim
f. Observe and record the waveform
