Directions rovide complete, thoughtful, and concise responses to the following
prompts. Each of your responses should be approximately half a page in length and
should demonstrate your understanding of the material to indicate your level of
mastery of the concepts. (10 points each)
1. Flowering plants are largely considered to be the most successful plant life on earth.
There are a number of reasons for this assertion. Define and describe a number of
these while asserting how these have aided modern flowering plants.
2. The vast majority of flowering plants are co-adapted with animals. Describe several
ways I which this is evident.
3. Many wetland plant species of vascular plants are species that have re-colonized
water from terrestrial species. What characteristics of vascular plants would you
expect to be diminished or lost from those species? Why might these be absent?
4. Woody stemmed vegetation is generally produced in fixed manner. Describe this
process by referencing the tissues that produce wood and the cell types that form
them.
5. Distinguish between the vascular and non-vascular species and discuss the strengths
and weaknesses of those.
6. Discuss the characteristics that distinguish between monocot and eudicot plants.
7. Plants, of course, don have nervous systems to control their bodies. Instead, they
depend on hormones to coordinate activities. Name and describe at least four
hormones that control plants.
8. Discuss at least four of the many modified leaves that are found on modern plants.
What are the advantages of each of these?
9. Compare (discuss similarities) and contrast (discuss differences) between bryophyte,
seedless vascular, gymnosperm, and angiosperm life cycles.
10. Photosynthesis takes place in the leaves of plants, but terrestrial plants get their
water from the soil in which they are planted. Provide a full description of the
process by which water in the soil reaches the leaves and, eventually, exits the
leaves.
