Question 1: Waves (9 points)
a. Label the following properties on the wave below: amplitude, wavelength, crest, and
trough. (3 points)
b. Calculate the speed of a wave that has a frequency of 4800 Hz and a wavelength of 2.0 m.
(2 points)
c. After his boat runs out of gas, a boater considers dropping the motor into the water to
create waves. Describe the resulting motion of the boat, and explain why the boateràplan
will not help him reach shore. Write two or three sentences to explain your reasoning. (4
points)
Question 2: Interactions of Waves (6 points)
a. Draw the wave that results when the two waves shown below interact through
constructive interference. (2 points)
b. The sounds from a stage seem quieter in certain seats in the auditorium. Write one or two
sentences to explain the wave interaction that is responsible for these quiet spots. (2 points)
c. Write one or two sentences to define refraction and to describe a situation that
demonstrates this wave interaction. (2 points)
Question 3: Sound (12 points)
a. Your friend beats a drum across the room from you. How does the drum make a sound?
How does the energy of the sound reach you? Why don’t you feel a push of air when you hear
the sound? Write three or four sentences to state your answers. (3 points)
b. Describe the amplitude and frequency of the sound wave for a high, loud note. Identify the
characteristic of the sound that is connected to each wave property. (2 points)
c. Write two or three sentences to define intensity and to state how intensity changes as the
distance from the sound is increased. (2 points)
d. A sound is transmitted through equal lengths of air and steel. In which material does
sound travel faster? Write one or two sentences to explain your reasoning. (2 points)
e. An ambulance with its siren wailing is approaching an observer. Write two or three
sentences to compare the pitch of the sound for the observer with the pitch for the
ambulance driver. What is the term used to describe this phenomenon? (3 points)
Question 4: Light (10 points)
a. Calculate the energy of light that has a wavelength of 5.43 à10àm. (3 points)
b. Red and blue light shine on an object. As shown, the blue light bounces off, but the red
light does not. Write two or three sentences to identify the wave interaction that each color
of light has with the object. What color is the object? (3 points)
c. X-rays and visible light are parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. Write three or four
sentences to compare these electromagnetic waves with respect to the following properties:
wavelength, energy, frequency, and speed. (4 points)
Question 5: Optics (13 points)
a. A light wave travels through water (n = 1.33) at an angle of 28 What angle does it have
when it passes from the water into glass (n = 1.5)? (2 points)
b. Draw a ray diagram to locate the image of the object below. Write one or two sentences to
describe the type of image, its size relative to the object, and its position with respect to the
mirror. (4 points)
c. An object is located 85.0 cm from a convex lens. The focal length is 25.0 cm. What is the
image distance? Is the image real or virtual? (3 points)
d. An object is located 35.0 cm from a convex mirror. The image distance is r.7 cm. What
is the magnification? (2 points)
e. For a person who is farsighted, seeing nearby objects is difficult. The light from these
objects gets focused too far back in the eye. Write one to two sentences to identify the type
of lens that can be used to correct farsightedness and to describe why it works. (2 points)
