Read the section of Chap. 11 on Neanderthals and the Archaic Humans and Neanderthals online
lecture. View the film “Decoding Neanderthals” (link below). Then compose a narrative of a
typical Neanderthal day following the instructions below.
Instructions: Compose a narrative of at least 300 words describing a day in the life of a
Neanderthal. (Note–“day” is flexible, it can be a longer time element if you like.) While your
story will obviously be fictional, it should be based on scientific evidence of Neanderthal biology
and behavior presented in the film and in Chap. 11. Your narrative is should incorporate at least
4 of the following attributes:
hysical appearance (body form, facial structure, robusticity, etc) and how these features
were suited to their environment.
Toolmaking and tool use (specific stone flaking and hafting techniques)
Food acquisition and diet
Language ability
Types of injuries suffered and care of the sick
Possible symbolism, decorating the body, rituals
Interaction with modern Homo sapiens
You can include any other attributes of Neanderthals if you wish, so long as they are based on
information from the film and readings.
You can structure your narrative anyway you like. Creativity is encouraged, but isn’t a required
component of your score. Try to have fun with this! As you are working from course material,
you do NOT need to cite your sources.
Here’s an example of a portion of one I wrote:
Grog was woken up by the icy wind blowing through his cave. It had been another sub-zero
temperature night, but his barrel-chested physique, along with his pile of animal furs helped keep
him warm enough. He stepped outside and the breath from his wide nostrils warmed the frigid
air. He decided to work on a new batch of tools, so he got a chunk of flint from his cache inside
the cave and got to work (describe specific flint knapping technique), etc.
