Autonomous Vehicles Research Paper
Description
SIA Proposal – Background and Instructions
Background:
In your Social Impact Analysis (SIA), you will be asked to analyze a leading edge design, product or concept. The idea is to choose a technology that has not been fully deployed yet and analyze its potential positive and negative social impacts. These include not only physical impacts (e.g. human health) but psychological, social, cultural, and financial impacts as well. This analysis, then, entails looking forward and trying to make a well-reasoned case for or against the technology in question.
You will be given a fair amount of latitude with respect to the topic you choose. It must be relevant to this class and feature a leading edge technology (this can include novel applications of well-established technologies). It is also recommended that you choose a topic that is relevant to your major. The following topics must be approved before submitting a proposal: fracking, artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, and CRISPR (and other related genetic engineering topics).
Instructions:
1. You will need to submit a topic proposal. It should be approximately, but no longer than, 400 words long (not including works cited at end of document) and include a brief description of the technology you have chosen along with a statement about why this topic is important (and relevant to engineering ethics).
2. You must also include a paragraph enumerating several potential benefits associated with this technology.
3. You must include an additional paragraph enumerating several potential drawbacks associated with this technology.
4. You will be expected to use at least three credible sources in your proposal cited using APA style. For this assignment, credible sources include but are not limited to journal articles, trade publications, and interviews with content experts. You may also use credible news sources and websites for this assignment.
5. You should not include a position in this proposal. This assignment comes far too early in the research process to formulate a defensible position.
