The teratogen I have decided to focus on is toxoplasmosis. Different ways that one can avoid toxoplasmosis is from cooking meats at the right temperature varying on the types of eat you are cooking. Making sure you freeze for several days to reduce the chances of infection, washing your cutting boards, counters after it was in contact with raw meat, seafood, poultry, and unwashed fruits and veggies. Avoid drinking unpasteurized goat milk and raw/undercooked oysters, mussels, or clams. Individuals should also be aware that the environment around them can also put them at risk for toxoplasmosis. Here are some things to avoid, do not drink untreated water, wear gloves when gardening, and have the people in your house always washing their hands. If you have a cat feed your cat canned or dried commercial food and ensure the cats litter box is cleaned daily, along with that have someone else in your household clean the litter box. Toxoplasmosis results in premature birth, stillbirth, and eye infections. Antibiotics can help with the babies eye infections and are also given to the pregnant mother to reduce the risk of their unborn baby will be infected. Although toxoplasmosis is typically harmless if you get toxoplasmosis as a first time mother there is a small risk the infection can result in a miscarriage.
