For each question, in your own words, answer this unit’s discussion questions in a main post in
200 words minimum.
1. If Thomas Jefferson looked into the future, he might not have realized just how important
and revered the Declaration of Independence would become. The Declaration is studied
and admired all over the world, and its importance continues to grow. Read more about
the Declaration and its importance in this article.
1. Explain why you think the Declaration has become the revered document that it
is.
2. Discuss whether you think the Declaration of Independence is relevant in your life
today and why.
2. For the Discussion Board this week, consider the impact that migration and immigration
have had on American ideas, beliefs, and values starting with the details of Native
American tribes during westward expansion to the current immigration and naturalization
difficulties. Compare how the U.S. governmentàrole and policies influenced
immigration and migration during late 1800s to today.

of Native American tribes on the Great Plains and west of the Great Plains?
2. How do you think immigration policies today facilitate immigration to the
United States?
3. Jacob Riis was a journalist and social reformer whose photographs of the poor in New
York City in the late 19th century are legendary for their candor and grit. Do a search for
the photographs of Jacob Riis (himself an immigrant). Many of Jacob Riis’ works can be
found here.
Riis and other reformers brought the plight of the poor, the immigrant, and the rural farmer to the
forefront of politics at the turn of the 20th century. The cause of such conditions can be directly
attributed to the growth of corporations and unregulated business practices during the late
Industrial Revolution in the United States (1850y00).

Migration and immigration are part of the American story. People have migrated or immigrated
for different reasons: freedom, sanctuary, or forced against their will. Everyone is connected to a
migration story that reflects identity, cultures, and values. These stories make up the American
identity.
For your Discussion Board post, consider the development of different regions in the United
States: North, South, East, and West. Discuss how internal migration (i.e., moving west for
opportunity, or moving from south to north for freedom) and immigration (coming to America)
affected and shaped these regions. Think about the following for your response:
griculture
Way of life
Food
Technology
Environment
Feel free to bring in personal perspectives based on where you live.
5. Imagine that your grandmother or great grandmother was one of the women who
entered the workforce during World War II. Discuss what you think her service
meant to her. Explain how you think she felt when, after World War II, she was
expected to go back to being a housewife. How do you think this time in history
affected womenàrole in society in general and in the workplace today? If you
actually have a female family member who served in World War II, please share
