Write a personal response regarding some aspect of Antigone by Sophocles. This is an informal writing that should be approximately one full page (double spaced). It is not to be a summary of the plot of Antigone. Rather, you should choose some aspect of the play and respond to it by explaining what you understand the text to mean and how you react to that meaning. For example, you might respond to Ismene’s reply to Antigone’s request for help in burying Polyneices. “You ought to realize we are only women, not meant to fight against men, and that we are ruled, by those who are stronger, to obedience in this and even more painful matters. . . . I shall yield in this to the authorities. Extravagant action is not sensible” (lines 70-78).

You could respond to Creon’s statement, “The man the city sets up in authority must be obeyed in small things and in just but also in their opposites. . . . There is nothing worse than disobedience to authority” (lines 717-724).

You could even write a whole page responding to Creon’s attitude expressed in the following dialogue:

       ISMENE: Will you kill your son’s wife to be?

       CREON: Yes, there are other fields for him to plough. (lines 623-624)
