Policy discussion 6
Description
THE ART OF ADVOCACY
Stone (2002) describes a type of political decision-making that èerishes the richness and diversity of the human mind, that values politics and community, and that renders more visible the political claims underlying what is usually passed off as scientific truth(p. xii). Her approach is based on an appreciation for different worldviews, the interdependence of individuals, and policymaking as an iterative process.
In this Discussion, you will analyze the relationship between advocacy and positive social change based on the perspectives of Stone and others.
To prepare for the Discussion, review Stoneàmodel of a political community (polis) and the art of political decision making. Reflect on a time when you (or others) advocated successfully for or against a change. What obstacles did you (or others) face? What strategies were used to overcome those obstacles?
