z
z
SHIVANIÊWORK
`lot of the work I do is heavily
influenced by my upbringing, my
family, and the things I see around
me. Since I moved to the States a
couple years ago, I am always
finding new ways to connect and
interpret my experiences of the East
and West in my design. While a lot of
my older work was primarily created
with an Indian point of view, studying
at MICA has helped me broaden my
perspectives, and (visualize) my
design through diverse lenses of
experimentation and unique
approaches.¿
z
z
SHIVANIÊMOTIVATION
?
Shivaniàmotivation comes
from her culture and
upbringing.
?
She is joyous when she is
able to showcase her
culture and background
through a model canvas.
?
She studied what others
did and created her work
by narrowing all the details
of typography.
z
The meaning
of creativity
z
èen I think of a òeative life,
envision a space where I am happy
with the work I am putting out into the
world and, most importantly, being able
to showcase my background, culture,
thoughts, and memories through a
visual canvas. To be able to create
discourse and meaningful dialogue
around your experiences not just with
other designers, but also people with all
kinds of professions, brings an extreme
amount of joy to me. And that is what
makes my journey as a designer and
artist meaningful in every way.

HER CAREER
THUS FAR
?
Shivani only started working on
typography and print media in
2018 as before that she was a
student majoring in

am constantly evolving my
graphic design practice through
experimental projects and new
softwares to develop my work
across the various avenues of
2D and 3D design. Shivani

z
SHIVANIÊTECHNIQUE
?
Since she was young Shivani has
been familiar with calligraphy and
lettering but when she joined
MICA she has learnt to the
anatomy of letterforms through
practicing typeface design.
?
She loves her work bold, bright
and thoughtfully done.
z
WHAT HELPED HER
z
DETERMINE
HER CAREER
PATH
nstead of merely looking at the
work of other designers whose work I
admired, I studied what they did, and
tried to understand how they did it. That
pushed me to study and narrow down
on the details of typography, which I
wouldn bother about
otherwise.Óhivani Parasnis

z
HER EVER-CHANGING CAREER
?
s a designer, I believe oneàwork is never
linear.Óhivani Parnasis
?
Shivani keeps on learning new concepts while
adjusting to clientàneeds.
?
For example, when she worked with New York
Times she had to learn how to intepred words that
were difficult to translate in English.
z
z
HER EVER-CHANGING CAREER
?
During the pandemic,
Shivani found new
interest in pottery.
?
ðending the time
energy and attention
over making one piece
of pottery is so fulfilling
that it made me realise
the value of personal
work.èivani Parasnis

GEMMA OIEN
BY GABRIELA URIVAZO
WHO IS GEMMA OIEN?
emma O²ien is an Australian designer and
artist known for her bold graphics, illustrative
lettering and murals.
he currently lives in Sydney, Australia
OIENàWORK
er work has been commissioned by Apple, Nike, Tiffany
& Co., Google, and The New York Times.
OIENàWORK CONTINUED
I create artworks, illustrations,
designs and wall paintings inspired by
words, language and the human
experience. I find beauty and
inspiration in the natural world ¦lowing shapes, layered patterns,
botanical elements !nd combine
them with the human invention of
typography. Gemma O²ien
OIENàMOTIVATION
er artwork aims to show that a real person was
responsible for what you see in front of you.
his is the driving force behind O²ienàbelief that
the future of typography is human.
his allows for human connection that is crucial for
artists to develop a following that is interested in
their work !nd them.
SHE LIKENS LIVE ART TO SPORT
he says, ou can just look away. hile an artist, like an
athlete, can practice a concept to try and perfect it, the
actual performance forces an artist to take a leap into an
environment where mistakes can be airbrushed out.
hat, O²ien argues, leads to the most authentic self of a
design that is purely created in the moment.
HER CAREER THUS FAR
For the past ten years, my work has been predominantly
commercial commissions for clients and brands around
the world, but I have also been creating personal work
and gallery shows along the way. Gemma O²ien
OIENàTECHNIQUE
Before you paint a mural you need to
master the artwork at a small scale first. If it
isn working on the page, it won work on
the wall. (e idea, sketch and/or concept needs to
be the priority rather than simply the
scale. Gemma O²ien
HER EVER-CHANGING CAREER
ometimes, she gets bored with repeating certain
processes.
he likes to constantly be excited about new projects by
taking a risk in creating something unknown and novel.
he believes that then, she really enjoys the process of
creation.
HER EVER-CHANGING CAREER
CONTINUED
I want to create pieces that hold your attention
and contain detail, a sense of artistry, care and joy.
With my installations I like them to be transient ¯nly up for a week or a month then gone forever.
The idea that something lives on only in memory is
a powerful idea to me. I want my art to reflect the
truest version of myself and how I see the world.
