Week 9 Assignment: Case Study (HSA)
Due Week 9 and worth 150 points
Imagine you work in a hospital that has been working on improving patient wait times. The average wait
during peak hours is 90 minutes. Your supervisor is interested in improving patient satisfaction and
believes that decreasing wait times will help. The hospital has implemented a new system and claimed
that it would lower wait times to less than 45 minutes. Your supervisor has asked you to evaluate the new
system that has been in place for six months.
You collect data from the past six months and then randomly sample 30 patient wait times. The results of
your sample are shown in the Excel file below.
Write a two to three (2é page report using the provided template in which you:
1. Construct a box-and-whisker plot for the monthly number of patient wait times.
2. Calculate the sample mean, median, and standard deviation for monthly number of patient wait
times.
3. Construct a 95% Confidence Interval for the monthly number of patient wait times.
4. Conduct a hypothesis test to verify if the claim that the mean monthly number patient wait times is
less than 45 minutes is supported. Clearly state the logic of your test, the calculations, and the
conclusion of your test.
5. Provide the following discussion based on the conclusion of your test:
a. If you conclude that patient wait times is less than 45 minutes, provide three (3) possible
causes.
Or
b. If you conclude that the claim of less than 45 minutes is not supported or justified, provide
a detailed explanation to your supervisor about why this perception might exist. Include
your speculation on the reason(s) behind the claim.
