Lab Presentations
? Each student will give a 5 to 7 minutes presentation on a topic relevant to genetics
on the last week of the semester.
? Students will give the presentation in person.
? Students will select a topic from the list on pg. 2. Every student will present a
different topic. Your instructor will communicate with you later in the semester
to assign topic for the presentation.
? Some of the topics are broad. You may modify the topic or narrow down to a
specific case/research.
? Presentation topics are not simply a repetition of what you have learned in this
course. They are topics in genetics that go beyond the course material and you
will need to do your own research.
? You should prepare slides in Microsoft PowerPoint or PDF format.
? Your presentation will be graded out of 45 points, using the grading scheme
given below in pg. 3.
? Presentations that do not relate to genetics may be penalized in
grade.
Tips for success
? Start early. You will need to do some research on your topic before you can
start putting your presentation together. Making good slides for a presentation
also takes time.
? Make sure your slides are easy to read and understand:
o Avoid combinations of colors that do not give good contrast.
o Make sure text is big enough to read at a distance. Don cram too much
text on a single slide.
o Use graphs and charts instead of tables of numbers.
o Make your talk interesting and engaging to your audience.
? Practice. You should rehearse your presentation several times before you give it
in class. Avoid simply reading from your slides.
? Each topic covers a very broad field of research in genetics. You, need to find a
way to narrow down your talk. For example, you may present a paper or a specific
organism/system relevant to your topic. You may consider including information
such as (and not limited to):
i) Introduction/Background info about the topic
ii) Methods/Techniques required for this type of research
iii) Important implications 0rovide examples
iv) Advantages and limitations
v) What is the take home message of your presentation?
