Reading & Writing II
Final Essay Instructions
Write your choice of a persuasive or evaluative essay of between 650-850 words. It
is due by 11:59PM, Friday December 16th. I think you might nd the evaluative essay a
bit easier, but itàyour choice.
If you choose a persuasive essay, follow the persuasive rhetorical structure as we
learned for the rst essay. You may choose any statement you like for your thesis. It
can be serious, like a major global issue (i.e (e UN should intervene to stop the
Russia-Ukraine war,/r ìimate change must be addressed immediately/r (e
environmental movement has gone too far,%tc. ). Whatever you think would be
interesting to try arguing in favor of. Or, write about a smaller-scale issue (ll classes
should be online due to the danger of COVID/r tàtime for all classes to be in-person
againn Your essay can try to persuade people of anything, but your grade will be partly
dependent on how well-reasoned your point is. By reason, I mean using evidence
and logic to support your topic sentences. Don forget that the rst body paragraph of
your persuasive essay states the argument against your thesis, so you need to
understand the other side of the argument.
If you need to revies how to write a persuasive essay, then look again at the
Essay 1 instructions.
If you choose an evaluative essay, follow the evaluative rhetorical structure as we
learned for the second essay. The simplest option for you might to evaluate a
photograph using Gri ths4hree criteria (light, composition, moment), just like you did
for your evaluative essay before. Itàpages 53-54, paragraphs A-E in the book. If you
choose to evaluate a photograph, don forget to include a PDF or other image le of
the photo with your paper.
Another option that may be more di cult (but more fun?) is to evaluate a lm or
movie: you may choose three (or four or ve!) criteria from the list below, and use them
to evaluate a movie of your choice. Remember, you, need a paragraph for each
criterion, and your support sentences should refer to speci c events in the movie. Just
evaluate the movie based on your criteria. Remember, you, need to describe the
movie with clear details; the reader should not need to see the lm themselves to
understand your evaluation.
Review the evaluative essay power point if you need to.
