? In what ways does one’s theory of mind relate to their moral stance on societal issues? I
know not everyone holds the same opinions and values as I do. And I teach my children
that is ok, I read, “shifting from an ideology of fixing to reducing harm; stigma to moral
worth; and personal responsibility to enhancing decision-making capacity. A context of
harm reduction provided a basis for the development of relationships and shifted the
moral orientation to reducing harm as a primary moral principle”. Shifting Moral Values

? How can you use your understanding of theory of mind and moral development to bridge
the opportunity gap? The opportunity gap includes factors such as poverty and access to
healthcare. I would take my teen-ager to volunteer at a homeless shelter by bringing food
and clothing to those in need so that he can see the contrasting lifestyles. And to teach
compassion for others.
? How might you engage a friend to volunteer with you for a societal cause such as the
eradication of poverty, applying your understanding of theory of mind and moral
development? We would most definitely find a random street person in need and help
them from time to time. I would teach my children compassion for others, and integrity
knowing that they are doing what’s moral and good. Also, by helping random individuals,
the act of kindness is more likely to make an impact on someone’s life.
Post 2 from Ryan,
Theory of mind can be described as a person’s ability to understand the mental states of others.
We originate a theory of mind through our desires, beliefs, and intentions that helps lead us to
make choices and act a certain way (Rider, 2017). Without a proficient theory of mind, our moral
stance on societal issues will be limited. Leaving us to have a biased and intolerant, stance and
perception. Having a well-versed theory of mind helps us to feel empathy, compassion, and
concern for others in challenging and difficult situations.
One way I can help bridge the opportunity gap would be to continuously working on my theory
of mind and moral development to be able to provide the level of opportunity and care someone
needs. I plan on doing my part with people suffering from SUD, to be able to help those who
want to help themselves and live the life they are meant to.
First and foremost, education is the first step in convincing someone. If they have no
understanding of the value and details behind what it is you are trying to convince them of, then
they have no reason to agree. After discussing with them as much information that is available to
ensure they understand the topic, showing them the benefits in person and discussing their
opinions and feelings towards it, will help develop a relationship with what you are trying to
convince them of.
Theory of mind is closely related with self-care and emotional intelligence. Being able to
understand and relate to someone else, while showing empathy, compassion, and concern is
paramount in creating, sustaining, and healing relationships. We feel positive emotions when we
help someone and develop many parts of ourselves in the process that helps us in situations later
in life. Being able to place yourself in someone else’s position is one of the most important parts
of emotional intelligence.
