9.3, and 9.4 answer at least three of the following sets of questions:
A. “What do these texts (and the empires they represent) reveal about societal expectations for
women’s behavior toward women? What might account for any similarities and differences?”
B. Which woment and men are inluded, explicitly and implicitly, in the expectations laid out in
these texts? Who is excluded? What do these inclusions and exclusions suggest about the
historical contexts of these texts?”
C. “Based on the historical sources, how did the belief systems of Islam, Christianity, and
Confucianism offer contexts for gender expectations and family structures?”

the form of each text (life of revered holy figure, post-trip travelogue, inscription) influence
the reliability of the account?”
B. “What sorts of dangers are explicitly mentioned, or implied, in these texts?”
