Ellen opened to Sara about her harassment experiences with Dr. Tkachyck. As you read this week, an
adaptive leader utilizes four key components (emotional intelligence, organizational justice, character,
and development) to mobilize coworkers to develop a solution. Analyze both scenariosèen Sara filed
a report and when she didn. Explain what Sara did well as an adaptive leader and where she could
improve. Did she show emotional intelligence? Explain why or why not.
There is a growing amount of research on bullying in the nursing profession, and nurses are at high risk
of experiencing it globally (Karatunaa et al., 2020). When Sara filed the report, it was clearly legally the
right thing to do. She was straight forward about doing so and explained to Ellen why it was her duty to.
And when she did not file the report, although she did it to respect Ellenàwish of not doing so it could
have potentially been a legal issue for her if it would have escalated, and it was brought up to her by her
manager which was understanding yet explained what the consequences would have been, for example
she mentioned it could have looked like Sara was trying to cover up for Dr. Tkachyck. What Sara did well
as an adaptive leader was show emotional intelligence, which is my answer as well to the last question.
The ability to recognize and comprehend one’s own emotions, as well as the capacity to engage with
others, are seen as indicators of emotional intelligence (Cui, 2021). She showed this when she was
explaining to Ellen why she should report the incidence while showing her empathy and respecting her
decisions.
Discussion 2
Adaptive leadership is an approach that allows for fluency and adaptation in face of challenges.
Adaptive leaders empower five principles: organizational justice, emotional intelligence,
transparency, development, and mobilization (Eliot Partnership, 2022). Sara did well as an
adaptive leader because she was able to actively listen, acknowledge, and provide ethical
solutions to the situation. In this scenario, Ellen expressed her concerns to Sara about Dr.
Tkachyck but thought it was best to not report it due to possible ramifications. Sara was
empathetic, expressing her concern about the situation and providing a rightful solution to the
issue. She was transparent with Ellen about her actions moving forward with a report against Dr.
Tkachyck, explaining why it was necessary to report and ensuring that she had her full support.
Sara was able to mobilize Ellen to do the right action by adjusting her attitude and beliefs about
the situation. However, in the other scenario, Sara decided to not report the harassment
experiences that Ellen encountered because she wanted to honor Ellenàwishes of not reporting
the issue due to possible ramifications. I believe Sara was still displaying emotional intelligence
but poorly because she was empathetic to Ellenàconcerns but was not able to properly manage
her feelings and respond to the situation. She felt she was doing good by honoring Ellenàwishes
and playing more of a friend role than acting just and educating Ellen on why reporting the
harassment was the correct action.
