Windshield Survey Questions
Not every question can be answered, but you should strive to address as many as possible.
1. Who is on the street?
2. What is their general appearance (age, dress, well-nourished, obese, frail, unkempt)?
3. What are they doing?
4. What is the origin, ethnicity, or race of the people?
5. How are the different groups (subgroups) residentially located?
6. Is there any evidence of substance use, violence, disease, mental illness?
7. Are there any animals or pets in the community?
Environment

* housing (single family, apartment, condos, trailers, etc.)

disrepair, etc.?
* availability of bike lanes, streetlights, or sidewalks (are they well maintained or cracked?)

Social Systems
Below is a list of social systems present in most communities:
* education: public schools, private schools, day cares, etc.
* nutrition: grocery stores, food banks, farmeràmarkets, fast food, healthy fast food, etc.
* healthcare: hospitals, clinics, doctoràoffices, urgent care, assisted living, pharmacies, community health centers,
etc.
* emergency services/public protection: police, fire station, emergency medical service, etc.
* transportation: paid city bus, free community bus, trains, etc.
* welfare: homeless housing, etc.
* recreation: parks, gyms, etc.
For social systems, the quantity or names of each resource are not high priority information. Instead focus on the
following:
1. availability: is the resource present within the community, and is it present in sufficient numbers to service the
population size and distribution
2. affordability: for paid resources, do they charge a rate community residents can afford
3. accessibility: can the resource be easily accessed online or in person (public transportation)
4. condition: is the resource well-maintained or is it in disrepair
For example
There are several grocery stores, all of which are from major grocery chains. Each store has a robust produce section and
healthy foods options. However, affordability may be an issue given the prices of the healthy food options. Each store is
accessible by nearby public transportation. One store is also serviced by a free community bus.
