UTC Fiction Essay
Description
One of our largest goals in this class, second only to developing our creative/expressive skills, is to develop our voice as critics. In that process, the most important part of understanding what it means to be a good critic is that we seek to demonstrate the ability to take subjective observations and ground them firmly in objective observations and clearly defined criteria of judgment. For example, as we discuss image, we’re going to identify techniques of building effective image and consider the effects that they have. Then, we can observe how an author might use that technique and to what effect. From there, we can make a final judgment about whether or not the choice to take that approach is effective by discussing whether or not we believe the technique to have a clear and tangible effect in that example.
Requirements:
* You must cover a minimum of 5 of your peers. There is no limit to how many you can discuss – but if you try to talk about too many without developing the individual discussions, you will create a discussion with a choppy and repetitive feel.
* Though you can work with a subset of ideas from Burroway (character, setting, etc), you need to stay focused on either a single craft technique or a single set of craft techniques.
* You are expected to incorporate clear elements of structure both in terms of a larger direction for the discussion and clear paragraph organization.
* You are expected to balance between drawing broader observations about the work of your peers, the craft elements, and specific examples of those craft elements in your peers’ work.
* Please use parenthetical citations of last name and line number(s) for your peer(s) and last name and page number for Burroway to provide clear attribution of credit for material in the texts. A works cited page is not needed.
* Please edit/proofread your work before submission.
