MENTAL ILLNESS
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
(ADHD)
ADHD was declared by the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation Act
of 1973. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder has become an often diagnostic among
children and adolescents. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that negatively impacts
children’s daily activities. Children diagnosed with this illness may face difficulties learning,
staying still, concentrating, well behaving, and following directions at home or school. In most
cases parents and siblings are significantly affected when having a child with this particular
disorder in the family, because of the long term consequences this might bring to their lives. It is
very important that families obtain a clear understanding about ADHD to help their children
improve and receive the correct treatment and medication at home. Nowadays there are
numerous resources and community services offering help and support to families and children
going through this situation.
