REL 100: World Religions
Short Paper: Exploring a New Religious Movement
Overview
This semester we¥ covered many of the worldàmajor religious traditions
(Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Confucianism, Daoism, and
Navajo Religion) as well as atheism and, what I`calling, secular spirituality. For
your last assignment this semester I like you to research a new religious
movement. Your goal is to learn about the history, beliefs, and practices of this
religious movement, as well why better understanding this new religious
movement is important.
Assignment
You must write on one of the following new religious movements:
? The Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints
? JehovahàWitnesses
? Rastafarianism
? Wahhabism
? The Theosophical Society
? The International Society for Krishna Consciousness
? Wicca
? Asatru
? The Baha`Faith
If there is a different new religious movement you really like to write on, you will
need approval to do so. Send me an email at least 10 days before the due date
to discuss the religion you like to write on.
Your short paper must briefly explain:
? the central beliefs or tenets of the movement,
? a selective history of the movement,
? the basic practices of the movement,
? the social and/or political significance of this religion and why it is important
to better understand this movement.
If you look in the “Course Materials” module, you’ll find a chapter on new
religious movements from a different World Religions textbook. Many of the
options listed above are discussed there. This chapter would be a good start
point for your research.

it, just email it to me.
You must provide citations and references for all sources used in writing
your paper. You must list all resources consulted at the end of the paper
as a works cited or bibliography page and you must provide citations to
indicate any use of a source (whether itàsimply using the information
provided by the source, a paraphrase of the source, or a direct quotation of
the source). You get to choose how to cite your sources, as long as you
provide enough information for me to look it up should I wish to. Using a
source to think about or write your paper without referencing and citing it
constitutes plagiarism and will be sanctioned appropriately (see the course
syllabus) and reported to the university.
