Write a clear and coherent essay that answers the following questions. Be
sure that your examples relate directly to your thesis and that you develop each example in
depth. Each question should be about a page (double spaced), 2-4 paragraphs, can be shorter or
longer. No longer than 1.5 pages, or shorter than 0.5 pages (double spaced). I just need main
ideas and them explained so I can memorize them so don go into lots of detail, just make it
clear you know what you¥ talking about.
1) One might argue that American history after 1865 has been dominated by the idea of
¥form,” whether it be reform of society, the economy, or the government. Choose at
least THREE major reform movements that took place during this period. At least one
example must come from the period 1865-1940, and at least one example must come
from the period 1940-1990. In your discussion, begin by defining what you mean by
“reform.” Then explain the ideas behind each movement, who participated in it, and the
results for American society. Also comment on the success or failure of each reform.
2) One could argue that the political, economic, and social status of African Americans in
American society was one of the most important issues between 1865 and 1990. In other
words, since the Civil War, the United States has continually, and often painfully, been
attempting to answer the question asked at the end of that war: “What would be the
meaning of freedom for the freedmen, and would it be the same as the freedom enjoyed
by other Americans?” Write an essay in which you evaluate this assessment. Choose at
least THREE separate examples to support your thesis, with at least one example drawn
from the period 1865-1940, and at least one example drawn from the period 1940-90.
3) How and why has America’s role in world affairs changed between 1865 and 1990?
Develop a thesis that explains the evolution of America’s international position and
support your argument with at least THREE separate examples. At least one example
must come from the period 1865-1940, and at least one example drawn from the period
1940-1990.
4) How and why did the American economy change between 1865 and 1990? Also, how did
American society, and the federal government, react to these changes? Develop a thesis
that explains the development of the American economy, and support your argument with
at least THREE separate examples. At least one example must come from the period
1865-1940, and at least one example must come from the period 1940-1990.
