Emerson College Performing The Real Questions
Description
Please respond to this week’s screenings, readings, and lecture materials in an organized post that cites specific details from the programs and articles under discussion. You should actively engage at least one of this week’s or last week’s readings (choose from John Corner’s “Performing the Real” and Berretta E. Smith-Shomade’s “Narrowcasting in the New World Information Order”) to discuss at least one of this week’s programs (choose from Big Brother and Baldwin Hills). Please address specific and relevant aesthetic/thematic/narrative details about the screenings and use direct quotes or substantive paraphrases of the readings. You may start with some summary but synopsis should not comprise the bulk of your post. Please note that you will NOT be able to view your classmates’ writings until after you have submitted. I encourage you, though, to interact with/respond to your classmates’ posts after completing your own – this will help prepare all of us for in-class discussion on Wednesday. Below are a few questions that you may choose to address (though you are welcome to reply in any way that makes sense and about other topics not posed here):
How do these shows compare narratively, aesthetically, or ideologically with “complex TV” programs from the 2000s?
How does either program work to cultivate a specific audience demographic or fanbase? What formal codes do the representative episodes employ to entice either a “wide” or “niche” viewership?
In what ways does either show reflect or draw attention to the construction of “real” situations? To what political, social, or ideological effect(s)?
How are the production practices of these programs either illuminated or concealed? Would we describe either reality show as relying on an “operational aesthetic”? Why or why not?
