You may work in groups of two (self sign up on Quercus) but each student will upload
their own submission. Submit your answers as a PDF on Quercus. You¥ welcome to
use this as a template and write in the empty spaces, and you can also type your answers
in a new blank document but please include the correct subsections (e.g., 1.1 or 1.2,
depending on which question you¥ answering). If you need a judgement about whether
itàpossible to say something in English or not, you¥ encouraged to post on Piazza.

Islands (8 points)
Each of the following statements violate a constraint. State which of the following constraints it is: Wh-island, Subject Constraint, Complex DP constraint, Coordinate Structure
Constraint, Adjunct Island.
(1)
*What was that the sloth ate disgusting?
Violation of
(2)
*Who do you both hate Francesco and like?
Violation of
(3)
*What did you have the recollection that Andrea enjoys?
Violation of
(4)
*Who did you ask what she gave to?

Tree transformations (12 points)
For the trees given below, please list the transformations involved from the following list:
do-support, Expletive insertion, V to T movement, T to C movement, Internal subject
raising, DP movement, Wh-movement
Think of what the D-structure (i.e., the underlying form is) in order to figure out which
transformations have applied. The first tree is done for you as an example. Note: The
tree is missing arrows to indicate movement but the traces are present.
Example: Who was expected to leave the ball by midnight?
Transformations involved:
1. Internal subject raising
2. DP movement
3. Wh-movement
4. V to T movement
5. T to C movement

Tree 1: What has not been done?

Tree 2: What did you buy at the mall?
Transformations for Tree 2:

Design your own question (10 points)
Look through the past problem sets and write up your own question and include the correct answer. It can be a tree drawing problem or analyzing a dataset or anything similar.
You can create a problem based on any of the topics we have covered this semester: constituency, X-bar theory, DP hypothesis, null DPs/CPs, theta theory, head movement, DP
movement, wh-movement, locality constraints. If you will be including non-English data,
please include the gloss (word-by-word translation).
You will get full points on this problem for your new question and its answer. If you only
design a question but do not include the answer, you will get half the points.
If you are working in pairs, please include two questions i.e., each student designs one
question e.g.:
JohnàQuestion:

MaryàQuestion:
