Analogy of an engineering
Description
Unformatted Attachment Preview
Select ONE technical *idea* from your field of engineering. The idea should not be a
foundational idea, like how electricity works, or why one sort method is better than
another. The idea should either be a fairly new engineering concept like blockchain or
an existing idea used in a way that would be “new” to a group of retired engineers.
Stay away from concepts that the retired engineers have been using their whole
careers, such as serial v parallel communication; these people literally invented, then
used that concept throughout their careers. For example, in the days before USB ports,
HW engineers invented serial and parallel cables and ports and SW engineers invented
the communications protocols to take advantage of the ports. Even non-computer
engineers at this point in time used computers all their careers and understood the
concept.
DO NOT just provide a straight explanation.
BE SURE to adjust your language and analogies for the different audiences; don’t talk
to the 6th graders like they were adults, and don’t talk to the engineers as though they
were children.
Do *both* of the following *for the same idea*:
? Using no more than 500 words, create an analogy of the topic and explain the
idea to 6th graders – typical 6th graders, not the kind of 6th graders you were.
🙂
? Using no more than 500 words, create an analogy of the topic and explain the
idea to a group of retired engineers. This is a general group of engineers from
multiple engineering disciplines. The only thing they have in common is that
they are adults and they have spent their career in some form of engineering.
The point of this assignment is to demonstrate that you know how to adjust your
material for different audiences. Do not write about the analogy conceptually (“well, if I
were going to do this, I would…”). Write as though you are actually talking to the
audience.
As with all assignments in this class, follow the writing guidelines. The word count is
critical to this assignment – we want clear, audience appropriate, brief, and to the point.
IF you do not know what an analogy is, I beg of you, read the following before
