You may use any sources that you wish in preparing your answers. If texts other than those
assigned for the course are used, please attach a bibliography. In keeping with the Cedar Crest
College honor code you may not discuss your answers with anyone other than the instructor. Any
quoted material must contain appropriate references. An average length for a reasonable
response to each question is a page and a half, double spaced.
Completed exams (on paper) are due on Monday, December 5th in class
Please answer any FOUR of the following questions:
1. In the late 20th century terrorism emerged as one of the products of a globalized world.
Yet, at the same time the globalization of terror was also an attempt to protect the
traditional values of peoples in the periphery who for centuries were powerless. Explain.
What are the forces within a globalized world that have created the proliferation of
terrorist movements and what sustains them?
2. Tourism is a by-product of the modern, globalized world but also draws on earlier
aspects of religion. Explain. How is tourism a colonial construction and what are the
economic and cultural forces that sustain it in a post-colonial world?
3. Religions have life cycles 4hey are born and die. Does globalization accelerate or retard
this process? Why or why not? As part of your answer discuss the decline of white,
Christian America and the experiences of minority religions in the United States.
4. The same economic forces that are responsible for creating a globalized world also have
resulted in climate change. Describe what these forces are and how globalization has
accelerated them. As part of your response discuss the difference between climate
change and global warming. Are there ways in which globalization can help mitigate
these problems caused by both conditions?
5. In the United States some ethnic and religious communities able to resist the erosion of
their religion and culture while others are not. Why? How are patterns of ethnicity,
culture, religion, and lifestyle preserved in the midst of a fast paced, increasingly
globalized world? How can ethnic and religious communities resist the homogenizing
forces of globalization and at the same time benefit from a growing, global economy?
