Role Play of Solution Focused Family Therapy (10:57)
Vignette: Kinsey, Denise and Elizabeth (sisters) are going to therapy to try to get past the
feelings they have for their father who was abusive to them when they were young. At a young
age, their mother died, and shortly after, their father started to become angrier and more
physically abusive. The abuse diminished as they got older, and he has since apologized for what
happened. Now, the father is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and needs his children’s help to
function safely at home. However, the children have a difficult time being what he needs because
of the past trauma. They have feelings of anger, resentment and bitterness, and they feel bad that
they have these feelings. They are hoping to be able to move past the negative feelings and
towards the more positive feelings.
Role Play of Narrative Therapy (8:03)
Short family narrative therapy session .
Role Play of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (11:16)
Vignette: What is featured is a mother and her two children. The mother is an alcoholic who
has a strained relationship with her children, but sees nothing wrong with the way things are,
except for her older daughter giving her grief about her drinking. The older daughter wants the
mother to go to therapy for the sake of the younger daughter. The mother does not really
believe she needs therapy, that she has control of her drinking, but the distorted thoughts are
causing more problems with the oldest child, because they fight constantly about disagreeing
on the drinking. The younger daughter often feels as if she is raising herself and is lonely at
school. She came close to being involved in a car accident with her mother while she was
intoxicated. The therapist wants to focus on how the mother sees her drinking to try and
change her behaviors, at the least, involving her children.
