The regression results shown below are from the article “Economic and cultural
determinants of elite attitudes toward redistribution,” published in the Socio-Economic
Review by L‚z and co-authors in 2020. Using survey data gathered from random
samples of political and economic elites in Brazil, South Africa and Uruguay, the study
investigates the effect of perceptions of the poor on elite support for redistribution in
these countries. The table shows an excerpt of the authors’ results for the Uruguay
sample.
The dependent variable (Y) is a continuous variable that captures individual support for
redistributive policies, measured as an index that ranges from 0 (indicating no support
for redistribution) to 1 (indicating strong support).
The independent variables are:
Poor are irrational
Binary (dummy) variable equal to one if respondent views the
average citizen in the country as uninformed and irrational and
zero if they view the average citizen as wise
Externalities
Dummy variable equal to one if respondent views poverty as a
source of negative externalities for themselves and 0 otherwise
Business elite
Dummy variable equal to one if respondent is member of the
business elite and zero otherwise
Political elite
Dummy variable equal to one if respondent is member of the
political elite and zero otherwise
Female
Respondent sex is coded as 0 = male and 1 = female
Father education
Ordinal variable ranging from 1 to 6, where 6 = college degree
or higher, 5 = some college education, 4 = high school diploma,
3 = some high school, 2 = completed primary school and 1 =
less than primary school
Mother education
Same as father education
Race
Dummy variable equal to one if respondent identifies as white
and zero if they identify as any other race
Age
Continuous variable; years of age
Ideology
Dummy variable equal to one if respondent thinks equality is
more important and zero if they think liberty is more important
Perception of self as
responsible
Dummy variable equal to one if respondent agrees that people
like them are responsible for solving inequality and zero if they
see others as responsible
Willingness to pay more taxes
Dummy variable equal to one if respondent is willing to pay
more taxes and zero otherwise
