In a reflective essay, a writer primarily examines their life experiences. The purpose of writing a reflective essay is to provide a platform for the author to not only recount some part of their life experience, but to also explore how they have changed or learned from–or how they are formed by–those experiences.
LOGISTICS: Although your reflection need not take any particular form, it should:
- clearly identify and describe the aspects of your identity on which you decide to focus;
- describe at least 2 specific organizational experiences that were shaped by your identity;
- describe at least 2 specific policies, programs, strategies, or structures that supported or undermined your identity; and
- explain why/how the events you describe were/were not important to your organizational experience.
PROMPT: Think of the key aspects of your identity. What are the characteristics, beliefs, memberships, ideas, affinities that define who you are? Consider standard identity categories (gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, religion, disability etc.) but also the other core things that you consider definitional. This may be professional (e.g. I served in the military), vocational (e.g. “I love to sing”), social (e.g. “I do crossfit”), or anything else you believe constitutes part of your identity. Now, reflect on your past experiences in work, school, or other formal organizational contexts. How did/does your identity shape your experiences in an organization? What kinds of programs, policies, strategies, or structures supported or undermined your identity? How important to your overall experience in the organization were these events?
