You need to design a structure that will support a single vertical load of 3000 lbs using the wire rope
fitting on the next page. Your structure will be attached to a vertical steel wall and the line of action of
the cable must be 72 inches from that wall. Your design must satisfy the following design criteria:
1. Your structure must be made from steel with a yield strength of 36 ksi and an elastic modulus of
29 x 106 psi.
2. It must be safe from yielding by a factor of safety of 5.0 (the wire roper fitting already satisfies
that criterion, due to the ASME B30.26 and B30.9 specifications).
3. The attachment point must use the diameter pin on the rope fitting (the fitting is shown
upside down from how it will operate.) Show how this will happen at the end of your structure
with clear drawings.
4. The deflection of the load point, due to a 3000 pound force must not exceed 0.1 inch.
5. Your structure must extend horizontally from the wall, although it may also be supported up to
24-inches above its lowest point on the wall.
6. It will be attached to the wall via welding. (Don worry about any stress concentration at the
welded connection.)
For your written report, I will be looking for the following:

You must show clear drawings of all your parts used in your design, and an assembly drawing
showing how they are attached.

You must include a clear description of how you made sure your safety factor is >= 5.0.

You must include a clear description of how your deflection is less than 0.1 inch at the point of
loading.

You must compute the weight of your design, assuming the unit weight of steel to be 0.282
lbs/in3. The lightest (valid) design in the class will get extra credit.
