Question 1

Reflect: In Week 1 you had some time to consider scholarly and popular sources and work on the first three steps of the research process. This week we will implement the final three steps of the research process: (1) locate and evaluate information, (2) organize and synthesize information, and (3) review and communicate information. Part of evaluating sources is understanding if they are credible. We have some ways to do this. One way is to use the CRAAPO test.

This discussion is a wonderful opportunity to develop your knowledge of the characteristics of scholarly and popular sources and to find credible sources in the library. You will accomplish this by searching for two articles related to your topic and questions chosen in Week 1îe of these articles will be your scholarly source, and one of these articles will be your popular source. You will use these same scholarly and popular sources throughout the course and on the Week 5 Research Topic Short Essay.

The ability to recognize the characteristics of different sources is important as you strategically search for information that matches your specific needs. Have fun with it!

The popular source I chose for my topic is èat Do We Do About the Biases in AI?®bsp; What Do We Do About the Biases in AI? (hbr.org) Links to an external site., by James Manyika, Jake Silberg, and Brittany Presten, Harvard Business Review, 2019. Itænbsp;recent and the content directly answers the questions I have for this topic, but I, find my answers in a more up to date source. All authors have backgrounds in business, one is a chairman of McKinsley Global Institute as a business and economics researcher. The other two authors are business consultants. The content is accurate describing human biases, how it plays a part with Artificial Intelligence, briefly explains algorithms with AI and how to improve it.  The purpose of this article is to bring awareness to business owners and the public. The source appears to be factual and nonbiased as it explains the benefits and the possible risks using Artificial Intelligence.

The scholarity source I chose for my topic is )tfalls of Machine Learning-Based Personnel Selection: Fairness, Transparency, and Data Quality by Goretzko, David, Finja Israel, Laura Sophia, Journal of Personnel Psychology, 18665888. 20220101, Vol. 21, Issue 1. This article is most up to date and directly correlates with how Artificial Intelligence learns to become biased by algorithms and how it is impossible to ensure fairness in the personnel selection. Both authors work for Department of Psychology and study how machine learning (Artificial intelligence) does not always solve problems with personnel selection. The audience is primarily for Human Resources as many organizations have adopted AI for their recruiting process, what to look out for while using AI and being aware it may not always select the best candidates if the AI if not used correctly. This source has been peer reviewed and explains in depth what AI is, how itænbsp;used, and to inform companies that use this program. This source appears to be factual as it explains both pros and cons.  

The importance of understanding the difference between scholarly versus popular sources depends on what you want to research and who the audience is. Scholarly sources are created by researchers and/or professionals who produce academic journals that are peer reviewed and factual. They list many resources, and they narrowly focus on a topic. The purpose it to introduce new research. Popular sources are usually created for the public and are for entertainment purposes. The data collected broadly focuses on a topic and tends to be more opiniated than factual. The content usually has a purpose whether itænbsp;to persuade, sell or again, entertainment. They come in the form of newspapers, magazines, blogs, and social media.

I used the research steps by determining the authorænbsp;expertise in the topic choice, the relevance to the topic, considered their level of experience, how it pertained to the topic choice and deciphering whether it may be biased. This helped me locate the information and credible sources which wasn an easy task and I specifically selected sources that would provide the benefits and risks to understand both sides of the argument along with the basic understanding of how Artificial Intelligence is used for the hiring process. The topic was to try to prove AI is biased but my selected sources will be unbiased to allow the audience to determine that decision.  I have emailed myself links to popular sources and added to my folder in the UAGC library. I also keep links available in my OneNote and copy and paste into a Word document. I learn best with physically writing notes so I most likely will be spending most of my time organizing on paper first. I haven figured out how best to communicate my research yet but if I have the option, I might create a slide presentation or add in an infographic to help support my research.

Explain why confirmation bias matters. Explain why it is important for scholars to be aware of confirmation bias during the research process. Include how this awareness is important to you as you seek information for your own research.

Hello class,

 A coworker of mine is a prime example of demonstrating a confirmation bias. One of my new coworkers came from a “Big Blue” Air Force base, which essentially just means that they have different rules and regulations than an AFSOC base. My coworker solely relies on what he remembers from his old base, despite the different rules and expectations we have at an AFSOC base. While trying to adjust to the ways of AFSOC he tends to use information that confirms his views while ignoring or discounting the data that doesn’t. While having strong emotions and a desire to be right, he has a confirmation bias. 

 My own biases may have affected the sources I have chosen for my topic for the research paper. For example, while searching for sources that have information on how nutrition affects pregnancy, I found myself relying on sources that promoted only healthy eating. While there are articles out there that may support all aspects of food and its pros and cons, I was solely depending on healthy eating. 

 There are different steps I could take to minimize the effect of a bias I had while searching for my sources. Firstly, being open and curious can minimize the effect of my bias. It can be beneficial to be open to other opinions and information, I may come across broad aspects of research on nutrition during pregnancy that I didn’t consider before. Being curious is also essential to be open-minded. You will never learn more or grow from anything without curiosity for different things. Also, holding myself accountable and searching for ways I am wrong, rather than being right can minimize the effect of a bias. 

 It is important for scholars to be aware of confirmation bias during the research process. Scholarly sources are meant to be factual. It is important to keep their research warranted on evidence rather than personal opinion. Confirmation bias awareness is essential to any research being conducted. No matter what opinions or beliefs I have on pregnancy, it is important to me that my information is factual and that I can hopefully learn more from it. Therefore, during my research, I plan to stay open-minded and curious to conduct the best possible research for my research paper on pregnancy.

Class,  

Recently a friend of mine purchased an electric vehicle and he argued why gas vehicles were terrible for the environment. He went on and on about how much CO2 gas engines omit and how gas was so expensive. When it came down to me telling him that electric cars were no better, he did not want to hear my opposing argument.  

The topic I chose for my research is inflation. I believe the articles and journals that I chose were based on my bias on the pros of inflation vs the cons because I tend to think with an investment mindset. I spent more time looking for articles and journals that focused on inflation-fighting information versus negative effects.  

According to our course material, there are ways to minimize our bias. An example would be to consider all facts and be open-minded before jumping to conclusions and skipping valuable information. Another would be to become more aware of when we are being biased so that we can stop and allow ourselves to listen to additional perspectives.  

It is important for scholars to be aware of confirmation bias when researching. If we allow ourselves to be narrow-minded towards a certain viewpoint, then we could potentially miss valuable information.
