Grossmont College Alternatives to the War on Drugs Discussion
Description
The War on Drugs has, from its beginning, had a disparate impact on communities of color, who are disproportionately incarcerated for possession and sales. A number of alternatives have been suggested from decriminalization of possession to full legalization. With both decriminalization and legalization, this would not have to apply to all substances currently criminalized but could instead be applied to specific narcotics.
What do you think the U.S. should do when it comes to the drug war? Should some or all drugs be decriminalized (though sales would still be illegal)? Do you think this would alleviate or reduce the racial disparities in incarceration? Why or why not? Should some or all drugs be legalized? If so, which ones and why?
