University of Montana Black Feminist Discussion
Description
Reading: Undrowned: Black Feminist Lessons from Marine Mammals (2020)
The following are some questions you might consider as you are working through the book.
-
- How would you describe the form of the book?
- What archives does Gumbs draw on for the information presented in the text? How does this effect the way the story is told? How does this effect you as a reader?
- Did anything stand out to you in the chapters for this week as particularly powerful? I encourage you to describe it in detail (in your meeting summary notes), including page number and why it stood out to you.
- How does the material relate to what we’ve already read/viewed? How are the texts in conversation with one another around the main themes of the course? For example, how might we think about diversity, epistemology, and intersectionality in the text?
- Please try to keep your discussion questions rooted in the text (not something abstract about the world). In other words, when formulating your weekly discussion question, please try to be as specific as possible. It helps to have a passage and page number (or numbers) in mind. A specific question can lead us to a more abstract, general discussion about the topic, but it’s very difficult to accomplish this in the reverse. Please email me if you have questions.
